Module 1 of the Ultrasound Training Courses in Kenya for the ORET Project took place from April 12- 23. This is the first Ultrasound module of a total of 4 and was conducted at Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) in Nairobi.
16 hospitals are involved in the first phase of the ORET project and 21 participants represented these hospitals.
In a very dedicated and enthusiastic way the 10 local teachers guided the 21 partcipants through the 2-weeks course. The module consisted of the following topics: Basic ultrasound physics, artefacts, anatomy of abdominal vessels, liver anatomy, anatomy of the gallbladder and pancreas and obstetrical uktrasound in the normal 1st, 2nd and 3rd trimester. After discussing these topics in theory the students were taken to the skillslab to practise in the ‘hands-on’ sessions.
Teaching methods used were: lectures, video-sessions, group work and group presentations in the classroom whereby the interaction between participants and teachers was of a high and energetic level.
The small skills lab for hands-on sessions is equipped with 2 Ultrasound machines. One of these machines is the model that is delivered under the project. In this way participants are given the opportunity to learn and practise on the machine they will eventually receive in their own hospital.
To make the time to practise in the skillslab more efficient participants were divided into 2 small groups to ensure the maximum number of participants per machine was no more than 6.
The module ended with a written exam consisting of 70 MCQ questions. All participants passed with a final mark above 60%.
