From May 23 – June 3 the second Ultrasound module of 6 in was conducted at ECUREI training centre in Mengo Hospital, Kampala.
The same 28 participants as during module 1 were present.
The overall objective of module 2 was to teach about the normal anatomy of pancreas, spleen, kidneys and female pelvis in theory and practise . Also the normal anatomy of the liver, vessels and gallbladder , taught during module 1, was repeated during several hands-on sessions. Physics and artefacts was discussed in sessions whereby participants had to create artefacts in each others bodies using the Ultrasound equipment in the skillslab. Participants were to present this in a plenary session to each other afterwards.
Another important objective was the normal obstetrical Ultrasound in the first, second and third trimester. This was discussed both in lectures and in several hands-on sessions. Pregnant patients were brought in from Mulago Hosptal for our practical sessions on Obstetrical Ultrasound.
From Module 3 on the participanst will be exposed to pathology of the different abdominal organs and the possible anomalies that can be diagnosed in Obstetrical Ultrasound.
Between Module 1 and this module the participants had to work on their portfolio’s whereby they had to make pictures of the different abdominal organs and paste these in their portfolio. The portfolio’s were handed in and the teachers gave feedback to the performance of the students. This is an excellent way to improve performance and learn to master scanning skills.
